I have in my possession unopened Drive Image 7 from Powerquest (now Symantec). I just want to solicit your opinions as to whether I ought to keep it or return it to my friend who's trying to sell me at a bargain price.

Thanks :-)

PS. I prefer to hear from those who have experience using it.

Drive Image is an excellent utility. I personally stopped short of purchasing version 7 because the .NET framework needs to be installed for it to function. If that doesn't bother you, then I think you would be happy with Drive Image 7.

Btw, Symantec's new Norton Ghost 9 is based on it Drive Image. Symantec recently acquired PowerQuest.

Hi michlin,

Thanks for the info. What I don't understand is why does .NET framework have to be installed for it to function? I think I've read everything on the outer box and don't recall any mention of it? Or is there?

Xpuser
I'm using ghost 2003 to image my laptop HD. I am trying to upgrade from 20 gig to 80 gig. I'm using the 80 gig on a USB. I was told you had problems with this. What problems did you have? How did you get around it? Was Ghost part of the problem? I'm a real newby so any help will be welcome. Thanks

Hi Wingy56,

I still have Ghost but haven't yet used it due to time constraints. As i explained in my original post, I was given an offer I couldn't refuse but haven't yet give in. I was soliciting the opinions of users like you who have experience using Powerquest Drive Image.

I was told you had problems with this. What problems did you have? How did you get around it? Was Ghost part of the problem?

I believe you may have mistaken me for someone else here or elsewhere :-)

Thanks and have a Good day!

Hi,

I had a previous version of Drive Image and I wouldn't go near it if it was free.

Hopefully with the change the product support has gotten better, but under Power Quest it was awful.

I never did get it to work, so I dumped it and picked up a copy of Acronis True Image.

The above being said, I know loads of people who love Drive Image and wouldn't use anything else. So, if its cheap enough, give it a go.

Hi XPuser,
I was using Drive Image 2002 which worked fine, but in case of emergency, you had to use recovery diskettes, and not all recent PCs still have diskette drives now.
I shortly moved to Drive Image 7 which has a more elaborate interface (works without rebooting to Caldera DOS) and a recovery environment booting from the installation CD (no more diskettes needed).
But Drive Image 7 will force you to install .NET framework (I know nothing about it), which can cause severe installation/unistallation problems (see my recent entries in this forum).
Also, it seems that USB hard drives are not handled by the emergency recovery environment, if you made an image on that type of support (at least my personal experiment with a DIGITUS USB 2.0 drive).
Hope this can help you - Claude

Hi Claude B,

I've took another look at the outer box and indeed it mentioned the installation Requires Microsoft .Net Framework.

By the way, I've read your recent two posts regarding Framework. Have you tried removing it via control panel Add or Remove Programs? Another question, what's the bad thing about .Net Framework, aside from the fact that this will change your Welcome/login screen?

TIA

I have been using drive image 7.0 for almost ayear now. it works very well and i have used to recover the system after many of my screw ups. It is alot easier to use than the previous version which was basically a DOS system. Dont be afrid to use it, its a good product and has saved me many times over the pas t year.
