Subject: getting dos to recognise my usb
OS: xp
CPU/Ram: 256
Manufacturer/Model: windows
Comment:

I am about to do a 'xp home' restore, so I need to backup my data on an external drive. Because its a notebook I need to plug it in to my usb, but can not get dos to recognise my usb.
I tried Hirens boot cd which is suppose to have driver for usb in dos mode. I also can not get into safe mode.
When Hirens tried to load USBASPI ,it said
some type of error.
On a different subject I also I tried
'sfc /scannow' ,but dos said its
a bad command or missing file name.

Please any help would be appreciated.

One alternate solution is to get one of these, which will enable you to pop your laptop drive into your desktop machine.

In my opinion, trying to access a drive with Xtra Putrid, which is probably NTFS anyhow, is pretty futile.

" some type of error"

Sure.

As Name indicates, if it's NTFS you can save plenty of lost motion, tinkering with config & autoexec.

Much will depend on the hardware, but this works on mine:

config:
devicehigh = \util\USBASPI1.SYS
devicehigh = \util\DI1000DD.SYS

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Their products work as are based on Linux, trying to get **-DOS to see an NT Based O/S is pretty hit & miss. The latest Panasonic USB drivers are 3 years old and were developed on MS-DOS6.22:

"USBASPI ASPI Manager for USB mass-storage Version 2.20 (C)Copyright Panasonic Communications Co., Ltd. 2000-2004"

What is this, about post #6 on this problem (including the one in the 9x forum)?

Starting new posts every few days and not following up on the old ones is one (big) reason why you're not making much progress

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

I have used both Panasonics USBASPI ASPI Manager for USB mass-storage Version 2.20 &
duse.exe both come up with error message.
The error message they bring up is simply says,"error loading usbaspi driver".

However, Duse.exe says the same thing, but it knows there is something plugged in , in the usb, but the problem is 3 seconds latter it says "failed to detect usb storage device."

The weird thing is if I pull my external hdd
usb out, it says "usb unplugged". When I put it back in again ,it says "detected usb storage device", 3 sec later back to "failed to detect usb storage device".
I would like to know why this happens and how to remedy this. I also would like to know what drive letter the usb would be on
if the driver loaded successfully.

e: is used by the cd
a: I have no floppy
c: my hdd
d: 2nd partition on c
r: the ram produced by the programs on the cd

Also I would like to know how much free space I am suppose to have on c: and d: ?
both still have 1.7gig of free space.
But when I run scanreg from dos it says
either delete some files or restore xp, so
Im assuming 1.7gig is still plenty of space.

MS-DOS is MS-DOS

XP = NT O/S

Best not to mix the two...........

I finally got dos to recognise one of my USB
flash sticks, but it will not recognise my
external hdd or my 4gig sandisk flash stick. Its only a 64mg stick generic brand.
When I looked at the driver property on another computer it said this.

Faronics Corporation
version5.7
--------------------
So my question why can it read this stick but not the other ? and can u put windows 98
on it without it actually having to load until you execute a particular file on it ?
